Big number, big headline, easy to grab a reader's attention.
But there's a smaller number buried in the file that tells you more about where this market actually sits.

That's how many of the roughly 45,000 British Columbia acres in the sale have found a buyer, across two separate attempts.
What happened. A first listing missed a Jan. 9 deadline with no sales.
A second attempt, run through a Ritchie Bros. tender-by-auction, closed March 3 and also came up empty, with title concerns cited at the time.
The ground is now back on the market for a third time, relisted as 11 packages with LandQuest Realty Corp.
Why it happened.
Two strikes on the same land in one sale process is unusual enough to be worth sitting with rather than skimming past.
Title issues explain one miss.
They don't explain two, especially when the seller has every incentive in the world to get this right the second time.
The more likely read: B.C. ranch land is a thinner, choosier market than a lot of Prairie sellers assume.
It's not Saskatchewan grain quarters, where a neighbouring operation can usually be counted on to bid.
Ranch country draws a narrower buyer pool, and a distressed seller moving fast doesn't always match up well with the kind of buyer who's willing to move fast on land like that.
What it means for the farm gate.
Everywhere else in this sale, the story has been reassuring for anyone holding Prairie land.
Stewart Valley went for 158% over its 2025 appraisal.
The company's own lawyers have said flatly not to expect fire-sale pricing.
If that's all you've read, it's easy to conclude a court-supervised sale of this size just validates current values across the board.
B.C. is the exception that should make you read the rest of it more carefully.
It's the one piece of this saga where the market has actually spoken twice, and both times it said no.
That's not proof the broader Prairie land story is shakier than it looks. It's one data point.
But it's the only real-world test result in a story that's mostly been marketing teasers and appraisals so far, and it's worth knowing about before you assume every acre in this sale is trading at a premium.
