🚂 The Big Bin: CN and CPKC Both Posted Record August Grain Movement
What happened: Both of Canada's major grain railways had their best August ever, and they had it in the same month.
CPKC moved 2.54 million metric tonnes of grain and related products in August, along with 26,051 carloads, beating the previous tonnage and carload records set back in August 2020.
CN wasn't far behind, moving 2.50 million metric tonnes from Western Canada, topping the 2.34 million tonnes it hauled in August 2020.
Why it happened:
This isn't a fluke week; it's a trend that's been building since spring. CN pointed to strong customer demand, close collaboration with grain supply chain partners, and the consistent execution of its operating plan as harvest ramps up across Western Canada and new grain starts moving through the supply chain.
Translation: the bins are filling faster than usual, and for once the trains showed up ready for it instead of playing catch-up in October.
